Part II: Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions

  1. A. Narrative report of Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions

I was fortunate to be trained in both clinical and research methods during my residency and fellowship years. As a result, I possess sound clinical judgment as well as a comprehensive knowledge of investigative clinical research.

My primary focus within cardiovascular medicine is both Advanced Complex Coronary, and Peripheral Interventional Cardiology and Advanced Non-invasive Multi-Modality Imaging.

During my Advanced Interventional Fellowship at Phoenix Heart Center, I mastered the skills of both complex peripheral and complex coronary interventions, including above- and below-the-knee peripheral interventions, Carotid Interventions, AAA EVAR, Peripheral Orbital Rotational Atherectomy, Pathway Atherectomy, Coronary and Peripheral Laser Excimer Atherectomy, Coronary and Peripheral CTOs, pedal interventions, Coiling, Venous Thrombectomy, Venous Ablation, use of percutaneous assist devices and PFO/ASD Closures. During this fellowship, I had the privilege of working with Dr Richard Heuser, the holder of multiple patents in medical devices [Co-inventor of Joe med stent, Couger wire and the first hydrophilic wire in coronary interventions     (the Jaguer wire)] and the author of several textbooks, including The Peripheral Vascular Disease Textbook.

During my ACCGME accredited Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Heart Institute, I acquired experience and confidence in performing and interpreting diagnostic coronary and peripheral angiography, along with left and right heart catheterizations through both the Radial and femoral approach. I received experience in performing complex coronary angioplasty, stenting, the use of embolic protection and thrombectomy devices and rotational atherectomy. I also gained expertise in aortic valvuloplasty, alcohol septal ablation and peripheral perscutaneous angioplasty stenting and atherectomy. I was fortunate enough to work with one of the best interventionists in the field, Dr Samin Sharma, who performs the highest number of percutaneous coronary interventions in New York, and most likely the nation.

Dr. Sharma holds the lowest morbidity and mortality rates in New York state.

During my advanced imaging fellowship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, I acquired experience and confidence with the acquisition and interpretation of complementary methods of cardiovascular imaging. These included multi-slice coronary CT angiography (64-slice, dual source, as well as the routine use of the first 320 slice scanner in clinical use in the United States); myocardial perfusion studies (full range of SPECT and 82-Rubidium PET/CT); and Echocardiography imaging (trans-thoracic and trans-esophageal echo).

My prior research activity has been mainly an involvement in multiple medical trials in general cardiology along with a retrospective study in Nuclear Cardiology, which investigated the outcomes and predictors of MIBI scans in diabetic patients.

Part III: Narrative of Clinical Practice

I was employed with Somerset Community Hospital in Western Pennsylvania from 2009 till 2012. I was recruited by SCH to further grow and enhance their Cardiology services. During the relatively short period of time at the hospital, I have improved the nuclear imaging lab, the echocardiography lab, and overall cardiology care to such an extent as to be nationally recognized by the ACC with the Silver Award for Myocardial Infarction care in 2011. In addition, the Cardiology service was distinguished among the top ten percent in the nation for cardiac care safety in 2011. More notably, I have grown the interventional program, from the ground up, to compete with the top practices in the nation. We rank number one in market for Interventional Coronary Safety in 2011. Likewise, my outpatient clinic has received distinction for excellence of care. The clinic was recognized as top ten percent in the nation for patient satisfaction and quality of care.
